It is concluded that the tricyclic antidepressants, imipramine and Amitriptyline ( Elavil ), possess satisfactory antimalarial properties. This situation leads to the presence of clinically relevant "orphan comparisons" of therapeutic interventions which have never been compared head-to-head. In addition, we evaluated whether these drugs, like other antimalarial agents, increase the hemolytic response to ferriprotoporphyrin IX (FP).
